The Northstars swept the Azuri Tournament this weekend with both teams winning 1st place. The U14 Boys and U16 Girls conceded just two goals in eight games to win by a landslide. Way to make us proud!
Our Featured Coach series continues with an interview with Paul McCallion of the Southern Alameda County Youth Soccer League and California Northstars.
McCallion currently serves as the Director of Coaching and Technical Director for the league, and was the founder of the Northstars. He is the head coach for the Northstars U15 Girls team and is also the Associate Head Coach for the Notre Dame de Namur University Men's and Women's soccer teams.
You can learn more about his experience in the game by visiting his SACYSL page.
Paul: My favorite professional player to watch is Wayne Rooney from Manchester United. The thing that intrigues me the most about Wayne's game is his work ethic and how hard he competes in every game.
Paul: The major characteristics that I try to instill in my players in order to help them strive to become a complete soccer player is to learn teamwork and work well with others.
I try to help them obtain a level of physical fitness and coordination that will benefit them later in life. I also love installing in our youth players the desire to make soccer a lifetime sport.
Paul: I think that rather than one specific individual training drill, I would recommend that every youth soccer player master the coerver drills. I make my youth players, high school players, college players and the professional players I have coached master these specific skills.
Paul: The things that give me the most satisfaction as a coach in terms of player and team development is when your player believes in themselves through trials and tribulations and come together for the betterment of the whole team.
Paul: The best piece of advice I learned is never to cut corners. Put in the work when no one else is watching and that effort is between you and yourself.
Both the U17 Boys and U18 Girls California Northstars Teams took 1st place at the Juventus Tournament this weekend. The teams battled highly ranked competition, fighting every step of the way. Congratulations to all FOUR championship Northstars teams. Way to go!

Team Formation Requests: Because of the size of the Recreational program the League is unable to accommodate any coach, team, practice schedule, carpool, or after school care requests. The only way to guarantee placement on a specific team is to be part of the coaching team (one head coach and two assistant coaches). You may make one sibling or friend request but no requests are ever guaranteed. If you list more than one friend request, only the first name will be considered.
When will practices start: All coaches are awarded teams in late July/early August? They are given a roster of players and it is up to the coach/manager to contact each player. There is usually an initial meeting between the coach/manager and the parents/players. Practices are discussed and the coach/manager will give out information on where, when and how often practices take place. You cannot request to be moved to another team because of practice location, time or days. The coach will determine the day, time and practice field.

The official notice of a rainout will be posted either on the league website(www.sacysl.com) or the league hotline(510-278-SOCR). The league will then determine when any and all rainouts will be scheduled. It is NOT the team’s responsibility to reschedule.
Refund policy: No refunds are granted once a practice takes place for your child’s team. Only refunds that are granted are if your child is unable to perform physically or moves out of the area.
